Need To Know.
Florence Takes Aim at East Coast.
North and South Carolina officials announced mandatory evacuations of the coasts yesterday, ahead of Hurricane Florence's projected landfall on Thursday. The order - which comes as the storm strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane with peak wind speeds of 140 mph - affects roughly 1.5 million residents and tourists. If Florence can maintain its wind speeds it would become just the fourth Category 4 hurricane to hit South Carolina - and experts predict storm surges, or the height that the water level rises above average, of 18-20 feet. The continental shelf extends out nearly 50 miles off the Carolina coast, creating a large body of shallow water that can be more easily pushed onto shore by high winds, worsening the effects of a storm surge.

US Marks 9/11 Anniversary.
The US will recognize the 17th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks today, with a number of memorials taking place across the country. President Trump will mark the occasion at the newly-opened Flight 93 memorial in Shanksville, PA, honoring those who died preventing the hijacking of a Boeing 757 that was intended to crash into the US Capitol in Washington, DC. The attacks - which killed 2,996 people, injured over 6,000, and caused more than $10 billion in damage - remain the deadliest terrorist attacks carried out on US soil (see gripping day-of photos here) and pushed the US military to adopt aggressive counter-terrorism efforts. As US focus shifted over the years to Iraq, and more recently to the Islamic State, Al Qaeda has seen a resurgence in Afghanistan.
US Considers Sanctions Over China Muslims.
The White House is considering sanctions against Chinese officials over the reported treatment of Muslim minorities in the country. According to a recent UN report, over one million Uighurs - a Muslim minority that lives mainly in western China - have been placed in forced re-education camps by the government. China denies the reports, saying instead that vocational camps are used to house minor criminals - though over 20% of arrests in 2017 occurred in the Xinjiang province, the nominally autonomous home to the Uighur minority, despite it only accounting for 1.5% of the population. The minority group - many of whom believe they should have their own independent state - has a fraught history with the Chinese government, with a cycle of government crackdowns following attacks by separatist groups within the community.
