Surprise Kyiv Visit

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D, CA-12) led a congressional delegation this weekend to Kyiv, becoming the highest-ranking US official to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The trip appeared mostly symbolic, with Pelosi pledging continuing US support as Ukraine defends itself against a monthslong Russian invasion. A number of other House Democratic leaders joined Pelosi.

The visit comes as Congress begins consideration of a $33B package to provide military and economic aid to Ukraine for five months. The bill faces an early hurdle amid efforts to attach COVID-19-related funding to it.

Reports on Russia’s advance in Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region—which regained renewed focus after Russia failed to capture Kyiv—have been mixed. US officials said Russian efforts to encircle the region are behind schedule.

In related news, reports suggest Russian authorities have begun installing (paywall, WSJ) pro-Russian figures in city administrations in southern Ukraine.
