Dozens of Ukrainians are believed to have been killed and an unknown number injured after a Russian bomb struck a school in the eastern town of Bilohorivka, where at least 90 people were believed to have been sheltered.
The strike comes amid ramped-up attacks by Russia on eastern and southern Ukraine as Russia attempts to secure a symbolic victory on its Victory Day. The celebration, held today, commemorates the Soviet Union’s defeat of the Nazis in World War II.
Separately, Russian forces continued to assault a massive steel plant in the southern city of Mariupol, where Ukrainian troops have held out for nearly two weeks. Reports over the weekend suggested all remaining civilians had been evacuated from the complex.
In related news, first lady Jill Biden and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made separate surprise visits to Ukraine over the weekend.
