Good morning. It's Thursday, Sept. 10, and investigative reporter Bob Woodward made waves across Washington, DC, yesterday. Have feedback? Let us know at [email protected]. First time reading? NEED TO KNOW![]() Woodward TapesVeteran journalist Bob Woodward released audio clips yesterday from parts of 18 interviews held with President Trump yesterday, recorded during the reporter's research for a forthcoming book on the administration. Most notably, the tapes include a Feb. 7 interview in which the president emphasized the danger of the coronavirus, a stance at odds with his public comments at the time. In a March 19 interview, he indicated he downplayed the threat at the time to avoid a panic. Critics allege the comments are evidence the president concealed the risk of the pandemic; White House officials countered that he was simply expressing confidence and calmness in the face of the virus. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the administration's top expert on the pandemic, also defended the president. Woodward—who rose to fame after uncovering the 1972 Watergate scandal—asked about institutional racism in a June 22 interview, to which the president said he believed it existed in the US, though less than elsewhere. Listen to the released clips here ($$, WashPo). The book, due Sept. 15, is a sequel to Woodward's 2018 "Fear," for which the president was not interviewed (Woodward has claimed a standing invitation was sent). Separately, President Trump hauled in a reported $210M in campaign funding in August. Power Five Football An unprecedented college football season gets underway in earnest tonight, as the University of Miami becomes the first major conference team to take the field when they face the University of Alabama–Birmingham (8pm ET, ACC Network). The game comes ahead of the first full weekend involving Power Five conferences. The ACC and Big 12 will begin this weekend (see full schedule), while the SEC is slated to get underway Sept. 26. The Big Ten and Pac-12 have suspended their seasons, though rumors have swirled about a late fall or spring start. A number of campuses have seen a boom in COVID-19 cases since reopening, though some argue players whose seasons are being held are safer due to consistent testing and medical care. Plans for attendance vary by school, but all games will be played with a significantly reduced (if any) number of fans in the stands. Separately, the NFL also gets underway tonight, with the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs hosting the Houston Texans (8:20pm ET, NBC). More Charges for Manhattan DoctorA former Manhattan gynecologist accused of molesting more than two dozen patients is now facing federal charges according to an indictment unsealed yesterday. Dr. Robert Hadden, 62, was arrested in Englewood, New Jersey, about 10 miles outside of New York City. Hadden had previously avoided jail time but surrendered his medical license in a 2016 plea deal with state prosecutors—a deal many criticized as too light. He now faces six counts of inducing others, including a minor, to travel to engage in illegal sex acts under the guise of medical examinations. None of his victims were listed by name in the indictment. However, his long list of victims includes Evelyn Yang, the wife of ex-presidential candidate Andrew Yang. Yang has been outspoken about being abused by Hadden while pregnant and has advocated for the Adult Survivors Act, which would provide a one-year window for adult survivors of sexual abuse to sue in civil court after the statute of limitations has expired. Read more about the act here. Enjoy reading? Share 1440 with your three closest friends. SLEEP EASY![]() Knock knock. Who's there? It's your new mattress. What's a mattress doing at the doorstep?
